5 September 2002 Jane Halton, in a recent letter to the Senate CMI Inquiry in reply to questions about evidence and questions on notice was ever so helpful in clarifying the source of the information that SIEVX sank in Indonesian waters:
Question: Which agencies provided the information that SIEV X sank in Indonesian waters? (CM 1959) Answer: As I indicated in providing evidence on 30 July 2002, this information can only be provided by the author of the brief who is currently overseas on long term leave. An Indonesian court on Wednesday sentenced the man who organised the fatal SIEV X voyage to six months' prison for immigration offences. South Jakarta District Court Judge Rohendi said Egyptian Abu Quassey, 29, had "entered Indonesia illegally after being deported".
