How many of the 1500 asylum seeker lives lost at sea since 2001 could have been saved?
Zahra (6), Fatima (7) and Eman (9) - the daughters of Sondos Ismail and Ahmed Alzalimi -  three of the 146 children who lost their lives when the vessel that has become known as SIEVX foundered in international waters en route to Christmas Island on 19 October 2001.

Jane Halton, in a recent letter to the Senate CMI Inquiry in reply to questions about evidence and questions on notice was ever so helpful in clarifying the source of the information that SIEVX sank in Indonesian waters:

Question: Which agencies provided the information that SIEV X sank in Indonesian waters? (CM 1959)

Answer: As I indicated in providing evidence on 30 July 2002, this information can only be provided by the author of the brief who is currently overseas on long term leave. PM&C has attempted unsuccessfully to contact the officer who prepared the brief and therefore I am unable to provide any further information.

People smuggler jailed in Indonesia

An Indonesian court on Wednesday sentenced the man who organised the fatal SIEV X voyage to six months' prison for immigration offences.

South Jakarta District Court Judge Rohendi said Egyptian Abu Quassey, 29, had "entered Indonesia illegally after being deported".

His arrest came within weeks of the sinking of a boat which he organised to take more than 400 mostly Afghan and Iraqi asylum seekers to Australia from Indonesia... [Full article]
