The article below concerning Khaled Daoed (an alleged member of the people smuggling syndicate that organised the fatal SIEVX voyage where 353 people lost their lives) appeared in the print edition of the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter, earlier this week. It was transcribed and translated by Helen Brooks in Sweden.

SIEVX.com has also heard from another source in Sweden that Daoed remains in custody awaiting the decision from the Swedish goverment about extradition to Australia. It is expected that this will come on 9 October.

GÄVLE. The man held in custody in Gävle accused of people smuggling has been identified by survivors as guilty in association with the boating catastrophe off the island of Java two years ago.

According to Australian authorities, the man organised the refugee journey which ended in the drowning of 350 persons.

In October 2001 a boat in Indonesia was packed full with hopeful people wanting to illegally enter Australia. The overloaded boat began to take on water and sank. Only 44 people survived.

The 35 year old man in custody is indicted for 'crimes against foreign law' and 'gross causing of another's death'. He denies the charges.

Överlevande pekar ut smugglare

GÄVLE. Den man som sitter häktad i Gävle misstänkt för människosmuggling har av överlevande pekats ut som skyldig till fartygskatastrofen utanför ön Java för två år sedan. Enligt australiska myndigheter organiserade mannen flyktingresan som slutade med att 350 personer drunknade.

Det var i oktober 2001 som en båt i Indonesien packades överfull med förhoppningsfulla människor som illegalt skulle ta sig in i Australien. Den överfulla båten började ta in vatten och sjönk. Endast 44 personer överlevde. Den häktade 35-åringen är åtalad för brott mot utlänningslagen och grovt vållande till annans död. Han nekar till anklaelserna.
