The following answers to questions were circulated:

Immigration: People Smuggling
(Question No. 2657)

Senator Faulkner asked the Minister for Justice and Customs, upon notice, on 2 March 2004:
In relation to the meeting on 11 October 2001 of the Board of Management which oversaw the Joint Australian Federal Police/ Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs People Smuggling Strike Team: (a) who attended this meeting; (b) were minutes or notes taken; if so, can a declassified version of the minutes and/or notes be provided to the Senate.

Senator Ellison - The answer to the honourable senatorís question is as follows:
(a) The meeting was attended by members of the Australian Federal Police (AFP) being Shane Castles, Terry Allen, Keith OíNeil and Dick Moses and members of the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA) being Tony Pollock and John Sargent.
(b) Minutes were recorded for this meeting at 2.00pm on 11 October 2001. The declassification of the minutes of the joint AFP/DIMIA People Smuggling Strike Team (PSST) held on 11 October 2001 would require the removal of considerable content due to the operational nature of the issues discussed at the meeting, therefore would not be an accurate representation of the meeting. Should the Senator require specific information concerning the activities of the PSST, a response could be sought from the AFP.
